NOTE:There is a difference between a dormer or dormers addition & a second story addition. A dormer addition refers to a home that already has a formal staircase to the second floor & about 9' or more from floor to the ridge, typically a Cape Cod type house.  A second story addition has neither.

I always thought building a dormer addition or double dormers on your home was the best buy to add living space for less money. No cement foundation costs, & no exterior doors, no steps, usually less expensive windows are all factors in the cost reduction. You also have the advantage of simple home bathroom additions & in some cases added storage space. In other words dormers are where you get the biggest bang for your buck, if you build the right dormer with the right contractor.
